Chen Jiu-Luo's Shino Tea Bowl (Year 2017 IBS Limited Edition)
A Tea Bowl Full of Endless Love
For a long time, everyone has been eagerly anticipating Chen Jiu-Luo's new works, no matter the Sakura Petals, Jiang Xue, or Shan Xing series. For some reason, just holding one of his tea bowls close to your chest makes you feel like your universe has found peace within the bowl.
In Year 2017, Venerable Master Huiguang launched his school-building project in Nepal. Cheng Hui-Zhong (founder of Cheng's Atelier) was more determined than anyone to raise funds for IBS. The first person who came to his mind was Chen Jiu-Luo. He wanted everyone to have a personal tea party using Chen's tea bowls.
That night, in the misty rain of Sanzhi, sitting in a tea room adorned with the words 「無一物」 ("Nothingness"), one felt as if they were in a state of emptiness. When Cheng Hui-Zhong proposed his idea, Chen Jiu-Luo immediately responded, "I'll make 108 tea bowls and donate them to the Master for the school-building project." This is the compassion of a Bodhisattva walking on earth. Chen Jiu-Luo's gesture moved everyone to tears. That night, I learned how to be a Bodhisattva.
Chen Jiu-Luo said, "Venerable Master Huiguang and Upper Sangha's remote location, their boundless aspirations, love, and power, all amount to an arduous, resolute, brave and fearless journey through the thorns and thistles from the very beginning of time."
The 108 mountain hike tea bowls, completed alongside the Diamond Sutra, bear the inscription "2017 IBS," specially signed by Chen Jiu-Luo. He hopes that you will hold them in your palm as if they were wish-fulfilling Mani jewels.
IBS is the abbreviation for International Bodhisattva Sangha, which is the starting point for becoming a Bodhisattva and the purest blessing for all sentient beings in the world.
Chen Jiu-Luo's Shino Pottery:
- Wood-fired, Chen listens to the Diamond Sutra every day while making pottery, using pottery as a medium for his practice and living a simple life in the mountains.
- Chen Jiu-Luo said, "There are seven elements to Zen aesthetics: 'uneven,' 'simple,' 'dry and tall,' 'natural,' 'mysterious,' 'unworldly,' and 'still and quiet.' These elements are better expressed in Shino pottery, which is why imperfections such as wormholes, irregularities, crazing, and cracking are all acceptable as natural expressions."
- To support the construction of IBS Sramanera School of Nepal, Chen Jiu-Luo specially made 108 tea bowls with the inscription "2017 IBS" at the bottom.
