Always Attain Peace and Happiness
Master Hueiguang said,
Our minds, something we use at every moment, what exactly are they?
All our thoughts, feelings,
and various mental activities arise from the mind.
So, what is the mind?
I say I am happy, how does happiness arise?
I feel pain, how does suffering arise?
How does the mind change and transform?
If we wish to achieve true happiness and freedom, and to eliminate afflictions and attachments, we must understand that all phenomena are ultimately unattainable in their true nature.
Because all things lack inherent substance that can be clung to, after cultivating virtuous practices, we must learn to let go.
Letting go is not the same as giving up.
Letting go is a right attitude toward life, born from understanding reality as it truly is.
Everything in this world arises and perishes moment by moment, like a dream or illusion.
By realizing that all phenomena are devoid of self and anything that belongs to self, we come to see that everything is empty.
Emptiness does not mean abandoning life or ceasing to engage in work and endeavors.
Rather, it allows you to be at ease when gaining and at peace when losing.
If one can only be at ease when gaining but not when losing, such wisdom is incomplete.
When gaining, not only should you rejoice, but you should also cherish and make good use of the blessings you currently have, knowing that they are impermanent.
When losing, there is no need for regret or sorrow because the causes and conditions have ended.
As long as virtuous practices were cultivated in the past,
the causes and conditions for happiness will surely return.
By understanding this principle, one's mind becomes unburdened,
and one can always attain peace and happiness.
