☕Nepal has coffee?
Yes... Three years ago, I followed Venerable Huiguang to Nepal on his mission to set up a school for novice monks.
At the local bazaar, I was surprised to find that Nepal is also a coffee-producing country. A coffee field owner in Nuwakot District, Nepal not only grew coffee beans, but worked together with farmers nearby on a “contract production” basis to help improve their livelihood. He told Venerable Hueiguang that most residents in his neighbourhood are Damai, who used to worship Buddhism but are no longer following its teachings today. To make ends meet, some poor families would sell their little girl for a mere USD25...
These words reduced Venerable Huiguang to silence. He has never forgotten his wish to groom 200 novice monks each year. Today, a group of children monks are picking coffee beans nearby basking in joy.
Would every sip of this coffee bring your thoughts to Nepal?
Sow seeds of kindness to brighten a little girl’s future!
▍More about this coffee from the snow-capped mountains in Nuwakot:
Venerable Huiguang named the coffee beans from this mountain area “Siddhi”, a Sanskrit word meaning perfection and success. These organic beans sown in terrains above 1,450 metres are nurtured amidst all the gifts of nature in the Himalayas, which encapsulate a purity not usually found otherwise.
