Proceeds go to support Chinese Chan Publications, the publishing house of Master Chi Chern in the United States.

The art of Master Chi Chern

The characteristic of Master Chi Chern's artwork which he just used only water and ink as the artwork materials. Water and ink are just two colors, black and white. However, Master Chi Chern is like a magician who makes these two simple colors on rice paper to present the possibility of different levels and infinite variations.

He describes his state of mind during the creative process: "When I create, I know what I want to write or the concept I want to convey, and then I put the brush to paper. Once the brush touches the paper, I let it guide itself."

"When ink and water are applied on the paper, it can present numerous possibilities. Although there are only black and white, it can show many variations. During the creative process, I apply the techniques based on this foundation. Then I let the brush move along with the circumstances - it follows my thoughts and moves accordingly."

We can directly perceive the beauty of Master's calligraphy and the meaning conveyed by the words. But what about his paintings? How should we appreciate them?

Master smiled and said, "If I told you how to appreciate my paintings, it would be from my perspective, but not yours."

About Venerable Master Chi Chern:

Born in 1955 in Taiping, Malaysia, Master Chi Chern studied Chan Buddhism under Venerable Master Sheng Yen and became his disciple.

In the 1980s, Master Chi Chern joined the promotion of tea culture. As a tea monk, he combined and integrated tea culture and Chan meditation in the promotion of Buddhism and tea art lectures.

In recent years, Master Chi Chern has held several calligraphy and painting charity exhibitions to raise funds for Buddhist organizations such as Young Buddhist Association Of Malaysia.

Starting from 1999, Master Chi Chern has been invited to countries such as Switzerland, Poland, Croatia, the United States, Singapore, and Taiwan to promote Buddhism, conduct Buddhist lectures and meditation courses, and has been well received and recognized.
